McCorkindale, Anderson set the Bathurst practice pace
Jon McCorkindale has comfortably dominated the first two practice sessions of the Dunlop Super3 Series season, as a tight fight builds for the Super3 Cup competition.
The driver from Young, in country New South Wales, entered this year as the form and by far the most experienced Super3 driver on the grid – and in the first pair of 40-minute practice hit outs lived up to his billing as one of the key contenders this year.
McCorkindale’s 2m11.2582 saw him top the combined Practice 1 and 2 charts by nearly two seconds as the remainder of the championship class field – all Super3 rookies – get up to speed.
Impressively, McCorkindale was within 1 second of the top-10 times in the Dunlop Super2 Series, with which Super3 will share a grid with this season.
The next three Championship class contenders were evenly matched as they worked their way up to speed on Australia’s most iconic circuit.
Image Racing’s Reef McCarthy was an impressive second, thanks to his 2m13.1441s flyer set in practice two.
The Formula Vee graduate ended the day 0.3 seconds faster than Blake Fardell’s VE Commodore.
Nash Morris was fourth on his Super3 Series debut with his 2m14.0598s best not far from the other key contenders.
Behind the first four, the battle for the Super3 Cup title this year has started with serious intent thanks to close times across practice today.
Bathurst boy Michael Anderson topped the class order and was fifth overall in his FG Falcon; his 2m15.2163s only 0.2 seconds faster than long-time Super3 runner, Brendan Strong.
Jason Gomersall Unit Racing Falcon was a further 0.4 seconds behind in third while two-time class champion Jim Pollicina was fourth.
Jason Foley, Super3 debutant Ray Hislop, Steven Page and Tony Auddino completed the Super3 runners today.
Cars return to the track tomorrow morning at 8:30am for Race 1 Qualifying, prior to the first race set for 1:40pm.
Qualifying will be shown live on Fox Sports and Kayo, while the race will also be shown on the screens of Seven.
