Classic GT Falcon to go under the hammer to fund racing dream

The father of seventeen year old rising star, Reef McCarthy, is making a car lovers’ ultimate sacrifice to help fund his son’s racing career by selling off his prized 1970 XW Ford GT Falcon.

The online auction, being conducted by Shannon’s Auctions and scheduled to take place between 13-20 April, will be used to raise money to help pay for Reef McCarthy’s opening season in the Dunlop Super3 category where costs run into the hundreds of thousands for a full season.

Scott McCarthy, Reef’s father, said that he made up his mind to make the ultimate sacrifice after his son delivered an impressive performance at the season opener of the Dunlop Super3 series at Bathurst in February.

“Reef showed everyone what he is capable of in round one of the Dunlop Super3 Series and without any sponsors onboard I had to make a decision to do one more round or sell my prized 1970 Ford Falcon GT,” he said.

“I know Reef has what it takes to make it to the top in Australian motorsport and without the support of any sponsors at this stage I knew I had to make a tough decision.

“I have owned the Falcon GT for the past twelve years and it will be a very sad day for me once the auction is done and dusted but I know someone else will get to enjoy this classic collector’s car.”

“We are hoping to raise more than $150,000 to allow Reef to compete in another two or three rounds of the Dunlop Super3 Series but even after the car is sold, we will still need support from sponsors in order to complete the entire season.

“I am hopeful that someone will spot Reef’s talent and offer to support him on his journey through a partnership that can deliver positive outcomes and exposure for potential sponsors. Motorsport is a tough and expensive business but I am prepared to make this personal sacrifice to see how far we can take Reef’s racing career.

“Reef has already shown through his open wheeler success and the opening round of Super3’s that he has the ability to be a future champion, now all we need is a sponsor to share the journey with.”

The next round of the Dunlop Super3 Series will be held at Winton Motor Raceway between May 28-30, with live coverage on Fox Sports 506 and Kayo Sports throughout the weekend.
