Allen tops the field in challenging Sydney practice conditions

TEENAGER Kai Allen has topped the times in the opening day of practice for the 2022 Dunlop Super3 Series at a wet Sydney Motorsport Park.

The first practice session of two at Sydney Motorsport Park would produce the quicker times for the day.

RESULTS: Sydney Motorsport Park

Sixteen-year-old Kai Allen was the fastest in former Team Vodafone Holden Commodore VE that finished second at Bathurst in 2010, driven then by Jamie Whincup and Steve Owen.

The session started on a patchily damp track until about 20 minutes when a heavy downpour forced everyone onto wets, and later back to dry tyres for a brief period.

There were two stoppages, the first when Paul Boschert spun his ex-Paul Morris Motorsport VE at Turn 8 onto the wet inside grass and the second came when Garry Hill (Commodore) speared off at Turn 1 and nudged the tyre wall adjacent turn two.

Behind Allen in the tricky session was Jim Pollicina (ex-Triple Eight VE), Brad Vaughan (ex-FPR Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG), Chris Smerdon (FG), Hill, Jason Gomersall (FG), James Masterton (VE), Ray Hislop (FG), Boschert and Blake Fardell (VE).

Rounding out the 14-car entry were Steven Page (VE), Tony Auddino (Falcon BF) and Shane Beikoff (Falcon AU). Jarred Danaher (FG) didn’t register a time as he wanted to conserve his stock of wets.

They went out for session two on a wet track and it just got wetter – It was stopped twice, once for a Super2 Falcon off at turn 11 and then for Page, who bunkered close to the end of the session.

Fardell was fastest of the Super3 contingent – ninth overall with Allen tenth. Vaughan was next from Pollicina, Hislop, Hills, Gomersall, Smerdon, Auddino, Danaher, Beikoff, Masterton, Page and Boschert.

The field returns for qualifying and the opening race of the season tomorrow, with coverage live on Fox Sports 506, Kayo Sport and 7mate.
