Allen edges Vaughan for Townsville pole

Qualifying for the opening Dunlop Super 3 Series race in Townsville saw an enthralling duel between Kai Allen and Brad Vaughan as the duo exchanged sector times up until the red flag stopped the session.

It was Allen in the Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE who secured the top spot with a defining 1 minute 15.1382 second lap. It was just under the fastest time set by a Super2 car in practice on Friday, and 14th overall after Super2 qualifying.

Vaughan in the Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG was close just 0.11 seconds behind while Blake Fardell (Muscle Car Warehouse VF) was a further seven tenths of a second away.

The Championship class trio were over a second clear of the Super3 Cup class best where Jason Gomersall was best in fourth position aboard his Matt Stone Racing FG. Next best was Jim Pollicina (Mocomm VE) from Chris Smerdon (MSR FG), Jarrad Danaher (Beikoff Racing FG) and Tony Auddino (Crusher Parts Falcon BF),

Then followed Stephen Page (VE), Ray Hislop (FG), the VEs piloted by Garry Hills, James Masterton and Layton Barker, and Shane Beikoff in his Falcon AU.

The session was stopped prematurely with Beikoff and Vaughan both off at turn two.

The Dunlop Super3 Series field returns to the track at the NTI Townsville 500 for race one, the first of two this weekend at 1:35 pm.
