Super3 field to tackle stand-alone qualifying sessions at Winton
Dunlop Super3 competitors will have Winton’s 3.0km of twists and turns to themselves when it comes time to set the grid for Round 2 of the championship this weekend.
A late change to the event schedule coupled with a bumper combined Dunlop Super2/3 grid has seen event organisers elect to split the classes for their pair of qualifying sessions – one each on Saturday and Sunday.
Rather than an all-in 20-minute session, Dunlop Super3 competitors will tackle a 10-minute qualifying session on their own before the Dunlop Super2 grid does the same immediately afterwards.
The lap times from each session will then be combined to set the combined field for the pair of 18-lap races.
The move is a response to the strong 34-car combined grid, comprised of 18 Dunlop Super3 cars and 16 in Super2.
As well as limiting traffic issues for both Super2 and Super3 competitors as they try to set their fastest lap times, the stand-alone qualifying will see the latter enjoy a session with dedicated TV coverage in a boost for the exposure of the Super3 grid.
Matt White Racing driver Hamish Ribarits qualified on pole the last time the series raced at Winton, his 2019 benchmark of 1m22.2193s standing as the Super3 qualifying record at the circuit.
Both Saturday and Sunday’s qualifying sessions and races will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 506 and Kayo Sports this weekend.
The Dunlop Super3 qualifying session is set for a 9:30am start on Saturday, ahead of the third race of the 2021 series which will start at 2:30pm.
Sunday’s qualifying session commences at 10:50am ahead of the 14:15pm race start time.
