Superlicence points gain for Super3 competitors
The Dunlop Super3 Series champion will now receive 10 Motorsport Australia Superlicence points – up from 7 – following tweaks to the governing bodies points structure this week.
The move solidifies Super3s place as a key part of the Supercars ladder system which this year includes racing on the same grid as the Dunlop Super2 series at Repco Supercars Championship events.
Points will be awarded down to the ninth placed finisher in the 2021 Championship, which continues in two weeks’ time on the streets of Townsville.
“Motorsport Australia regularly reviews and analyses the Superlicence Points System to make sure it is fair and in line with the current trends in motorsport,” Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith explained.
“We have worked closely with a number of category managers on the changes and believe they are reflective of the current stature of each respective Championship and Series.”
A vast majority of the Dunlop Super2 series grid this year – 15 drivers – have previously raced in Super3 / V8 Touring Cars prior to stepping up to the second-tier series.
The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series, another of the Australian Racing Group-run categories, also received a boost as the winner will be awarded 10 Superlicence points, two more than previously awarded.
Drivers placed down to ninth are eligible to score Superlicence points.
The S5000 Australian Drivers Championship also received a Superlicence points increase to 12, while the National TransAm series champion will receive 7.
Following the postponement of the scheduled Winton round, the second event in the 2021 Dunlop Super3 Series calendar will take place at the NTI Townsville 500 between July 9-11.
