DS3 field heads West for Wanneroo debut
DUNLOP Super 3 Series young-guns Kai Allen and Brad Vaughan will hope to break their deadlock at the top of the standings as the series heads West this weekend.
2022 marks the first time in the 14-year history of V8 Touring Cars / Super3 competition that the championship will cross the Western Australia border, racing at Wanneroo Raceway for the first time.
Teenager Allen, who drives a Holden VE Commodore for Eggleston Motorsport, and Anderson Motorsport’s Vaughan (Ford Falcon FG) are locked together on 288 points apiece at the top of the DS3 standings following a tight season opener at Sydney Motorsport Park two months ago.
Allen technically leads the series overall on countback thanks to his results in the final race in Sydney.
The pair will lead a 10-strong field to Wanneroo, which becomes the 13th different circuit to host a V8TC / Super3 Series round since the category was formed in 2008.
Hoping for strong results and a home-town advantage will be long-time Super3 Cup competitor, Garry Hills – who will finally be able to race in the category on his local circuit.
Well-versed in the tricks of the trade at Wanneroo, Hills’ has been a longstanding competitor in WA Sporting Car Club-run events at the historic venue and will be hoping to put his local knowledge to good use this weekend.
Hills currently sits sixth outright in the Super3 standings, but is within the top three of the Super3 Cup standings for privateer runners thanks to a strong start to his year in Sydney.
Those also making the trek West include Steven Page, Tony Auddino, Jim Pollicina, Jason Gomersall, Chris Smerdo0n, Blake Fardell and Gary Collins.
Following a pair of 40-minute sessions to practice on Friday, the field heads into qualifying for the third race of the season at 2:00pm local time on Saturday afternoon.
That race commences at 5:20pm local time – prime time on the East Coast – and will be contested over 26 laps as the field races into the Perth twilight.
A quick turnaround will see qualifying for Sunday’s race kick off at 8:40am that morning, followed by the race itself at 2:25pm.
Both days of action will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo Sports.
