Allen secures first Bathurst pole

Seventeen year old Kai Allen set benchmarks in qualifying on pole position for race one of the Dunlop Super 3 Series fifth round.

His lap time in the Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE of 2 minutes 7.4534 seconds was a mammoth 3.3 seconds under the Super 3 race lap record and Allen has equalled the number of poles in a row for the category.

Not only did he out qualify seven of the newer Super 2 cars and will start tenth in the first race, he also was 1.5 second faster than his main rival Brad Vaughan in the Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG. “It pretty cool to drive around Bathurst and I am pinching myself to be able to get a pole here,” Allen said.

After being baulked in his earlier attempt, Vaughan tried again very late in the session but the bid was thwarted with a couple of slides and he failed to improve.

The two had quite a margin on third place which was Unit Racing’s Jason Gomersall who had no comms throughout, Beikoff Racing’s Jarred Danaher and Eggleston’s David Murphy (with former category champion Justin Ruggier on the cans) in their Falcons.

Next was Tony Auddino in his older Falcon BF, ahead of Ray Hislop (FG). Following the Fords were Holden drivers Jim Pollicina, Steven Page, Garry Hills and James Masterton minus a passenger side window. Paul Boschert failed to set a time due to an engine related issue.
