Wet weather creates drama in Bathurst Super3 opener
THE Dunlop Super 3 field faced diabolical conditions with rain, rivers of water and even fog in the opening race of Round 5 at Mount Panorama on Friday.
Just two laps were completed at race pace and only eleven behind the safety car – under which it finished.
Kai Allen led throughout in his Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE, and praised the decision to keep the race under cautionary conditions.
“The spray was the worst; all I could see were the lights of the (Super 2) car in front me,” he confirmed.
Second across the line was Brad Vaughan (Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG) and he had Super 2 cars between he and third placed Jason Gomersall in his Matt Stone Racing-run FG.
In the limited green laps Jim Pollicina (Mocomm VE) picked up four places to be fourth.
Behind him came David Murphy (FG), Tony Auddino (Falcon BF), Steven Page (Eggleston VE) and Paul Boschert (VE) who passed James Masterton (VE) on the first fast lap.
Ray Hislop pitted his FG to clear the fogged up windscreen and resumed without losing a lap as the second safety car appeared.
Jarred Danaher (FG) was into the pits permanently after two laps with a broken axle, and Garry Colins elected not to start his VE due to the conditions.
The field will return for a second qualifying session and a second race tomorrow at Mount Panorama, with both sessions to be broadcast live on Fox Sports’ Bathurst channel, Kayo and Channel Seven.
