Allen heartbreak delivers Super3 title to Brad Vaughn
BRAD VAUGHAN has dramatically claimed the 2022 Dunlop Super3 Series championship, after year-long title rival and series leader Kai Allen crashed out of the final race of the season.
Allen was leading the final race when his Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE hit the wall at turn eight in the early stages of today’s race, immediately ending his day.
From there, Vaughan – who assumed the lead – needed only to finish at the front of the Super3 lead to haul in Allen’s lead and overtake him for the championship.
The Angaston Motors-backed Anderson Motorsport driver ultimately took the title by 96 points following a year-long battle between he and Allen.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes, to be honest,” Vaughan said.
“There was a bit of a celebration but I quickly calmed it down because I had to do the rest of the race.
“It’s a really odd way to win it, but I can’t be more happy.”
The pair dominated the championship, locking out the front row in 10 of the 12 qualifying sessions held so far, and have finished 1-2 in eight of the eleven races contested.
Ultimately Allen’s non-finish – his first of the year – was all Vaughan needed to overhaul the Eggleston driver in the championship.
Chris Smerdon finished second in today’s race, with Jim Pollicna’s third enough to ensure he sealed third outright in the drivers’ championship and also took home the Super3 Cup title.
Jarred Danaher, Gary Collins, Ray Hislop were next while Adam Wallis and Allen failed to finish.
