Bargwanna endures record-breaking day out in V8TC
Anderson Motorsport’s Jude Bargwanna has had a record-breaking day out after taking victory in the opening Kumho V8 Touring Car Series race of the weekend at Hi-Tec Oils Race Winton.
The 18-year-old started his day off on the front foot by claiming pole position with an extraordinary 1:23.0913 in qualifying – a new lap record previously held by Taz Douglas dating back to 2016.
He was then able to get the jump on the line and hold the lead into the opening corners, with Notlaw Racing’s Jamie Tilley and ANT Racing entry Tony Evangelou holding their starting positions in second and third respectively.
The leading duo of Bargwanna and Tilley started to pull away and endure a race of their own, while Evangelou was vulnerable in third before being overtaken by Jim Pollicina in his MoComm Motorsports Comms backed Holden Commodore VE.
With the race almost all but won, Bargwanna found himself sideways on lap seven after pushing hard for another lap record, but was able to keep the car straight and cruise over the line for his third race win of the season.
Off the back of a race win in Phillip Island, Tilley pushed hard throughout the entire encounter but couldn’t make up the lost ground, finishing over 14 seconds behind in second place.
After losing the place early on, Evangelou fought hard to take back the final spot on the podium but ultimately came up short, Pollicina picking up another big haul of points for his ambitions to win the series’ Kumho Cup.
Rightway Industrial entry Tony Auddino had eyes on his direct rival in Evangelou at the beginning of the weekend, but was unable to move his way up from fifth place where he originally qualified.
Jason Foley in his TF Maintenance backed Ford Falcon BF crossed the line in sixth.
While Bargwanna extended his series lead with the win, his ambitions to break the racing lap record will have to be put on hold until next time.
The Kumho V8 Touring Car Series will return for its second of three races on Sunday at 10:55am AEST.
