DOUGLAS ROLL CONTINUES WITH TWO WINTON WINS
Having won the opening round of the 2016 season at Sandown in April this year Douglas started from pole broke the lap record and won both races in cool but fine conditions today at Wintons Woodstock Supercars SuperSprint event in country Victoria.
Hes now just one victory away from becoming just the fifth driver in series history to sweep more than one Kumho Series round and extended his series lead in the process.
Douglas superb day started when he qualified his THR Developments VE Commodore on pole by 0.08s edging out round one polesitter Josh Smith in an intensely close session. The margin between the pair was the third closest in Kumho series qualifying history.
He then led from lights to flag in the opening race beating home Smith and Tyler Greenbury in a 12-lap affair.
He was headed briefly in race two when Smith jumped the start though the Brad Jones Racing driver quickly surrendered the position allowing Douglas back in front where he would remain for the remainder of the race.
Smith was penalised five seconds for his jumped start the penalty dropping him to third in the final results behind Greenbury.
The result delivered Greenbury his best result in his Kumho series campaign to date.
Jim Pollicina was another driver in the thick of the action today qualifying sixth before making his usual customary brilliant start to gain three places by turn one.
Unfortunately Pollicina ran wide at turn two and spun on his own ultimately finishing 11th in his ex-Tasman Motorsport Commodore.
He then stormed from that position to fourth by the end of the second race.
A strong day for former series champion Chris Smerdon saw the FG Falcon driver nab finishes of fourth and fifth respectively racing his way to the front of the field having only qualified 10th in the Matt Stone Racing-prepared car.
Bathurst driver Michael Anderson was a star performer in qualifying and race one: starting third and racing to fifth in the opening race. He was then caught up in a turn one incident early in the second race damage to the car caused while re-joining the track forcing him to pit lane and out.
Jason Heck finished sixth in both races having qualified ninth while Brendan Strong rebounded from a race one spin (after contact with Smerdon at turn five) to finish race two seventh.
Anthony Loscialpo Dean Kovasevich and Jack Sipp completed the top ten in race two.
Todays results mean the 15-lap feature race on Sunday will see Douglas start from pole with Smith alongside.
Greenbury is set to line up third with Chris Smerdon alongside with Heck Pollicina Strong Wright Sipp and Loscialpo completing the top-10.
Only four drivers Ryan Simpson Josh Hunter Terry Wyhoon and Liam McAdam have swept more than one round of the Kumho series since it was founded.
Round two of the 2016 Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Cars series concludes tomorrow at Winton with race three to be broadcast live on FOX Sports at 10:20am on Sunday May 22.
