Anderson edges Morris for Townsville pole

Michael Anderson has edged out Nash Morris in a tight battle for pole position on the streets of Townsville.

The Bathurst driver will start from the top spot for the series first race in North Queensland later this afternoon after a tight battle with the young Queenslander in a close 10-minute session that set the grid for Race 3 of the championship.

RESULTS: Qualifying in Townsville

Anderson needed just three laps to push his Kenwood Homes Falcon to pole, his 1m15.9894s flyer edging out Morris by just 0.15s.

Morris completed six laps in his similar Ford but was unable to close the margin to Anderson on his final flyer, ultimately settling for a spot on the front row for what will be just his third Super3 Series race.

Reef McCarthy will start the first race of the weekend from third, his 1m16.8854s best putting him within 0.8 seconds of a spot on the front row as the young Victorian continues to rapidly improve in his rookie season.

The final spot in the top four was claimed by the first Holden in the field: Blake Fardell another driver to complete just the three laps as he grabbed fourth spot.

Jason Gomersall and Brendan Strong filled the third row, while David Murphy was an impressive seventh on his Super3 debut.

Chris Smerdon, Steven Page and Gary Collins completed the top-10 as the field looks ahead to the third race of the season later this afternoon.

The racer starts at 2:25pm and will be contested over 21 laps of the 2.8km Reid Park circuit.

Coverage will be live on Fox Sports 506, Kayo Sports and Channel 7.
